Exercise as we age
It is vital, to maintain our strength, health, and wellness. We need to keep moving ‘lest we rust,’ I always say! We did not think much about exercising for health in our younger years, because we were always so busy, with plenty of movement. Movement is not the same as exercise. Our feet ‘move’ us, and our ankles, legs, knees, and hips help that movement to happen. Joints and muscles are responsible for that to happen too.
What about strength?
To stay strong, one needs to eat right foods, drink water, and take care of the body like one takes care of their child or pet. Making sure we get what we need too, is something we don’t think often enough about. Like going for a walk, or when picking something up off the floor, to make it an exercise move as we are doing it. Crazy little things like this can really help.
How can I help myself?
In my case, I purchased a CD entitled Chair Dancing, by Jodi Stolove, many years ago, and never used it. Well, I yanked it out the other day and played it and followed her leads, and you know what? It was fun! It did not take long, and “I” felt better. Yes, I was feeling it a bit the next day, but not bad. So the day after that, I decided to do the exercises again. No kidding, I feel better. One could also check out free or low cost offerings, at your Community Center, or join an exercise class. There are many available if one is interested and looks.
One can even buy cheap little exercising gadgets at department stores. I personally bought some stretchy bands that I could use to tone my arms and shoulders. They were cheap…like $4.00, on Amazon. It does not have to be expensive. Who need weights when a can of peas weighs the same, and is already in your pantry? Get what I mean? We aren’t about joining any contests, we just want to keep ourselves in the best shape we can.
Use it or lose it
What is the lesson here you may ask? This body was made to be used. It was not made to be sedentary, and doing even lite exercising will prove that to you. Just go slow. Remember, we are in a race with ‘anyone.’ We are toning and exercising in our own privacy and it becomes all about how ‘we’ feel, more than what other’s think. And on top of that, we don’t snap and pop all the time.
Give it a try! Find your greatness…it is there!
